| My mom needs help with depression and I am looking for someone to treat her. Online I see counselor therapist psychologist and each one says something different about their services. One says they can diagnose and one says they only do talk therapy. It is confusing and I dont want to waste her time or money on the wrong person. Does anyone know a good site about the difference between counselor/therapist/psychologist, professional titles, education levels, scope of practice, licensure requirements? I need to pick the right type of professional for her needs.

| I went through the exact same thing last year when my dad got diagnosed with depression. I was searching online and saw counselor therapist psychologist all saying different things. Some could diagnose and some only did talk therapy and I was so confused. What helped me understand was finding this clear guide at national clinical mental health counseling examination that explains the difference between counselor/therapist/psychologist, professional titles, education levels, scope of practice, licensure requirements. It broke down what each can actually do and what training they need. Psychologists have doctoral degrees and can diagnose and do testing, therapists usually have masters and provide talk therapy, and counselors often focus on specific issues like addiction or grief. For depression you would want someone who can diagnose and treat mental illness so either a psychologist or licensed therapist. I used this to find my dad the right person and he is doing much better now. Knowing the differences saved us from wasting time on someone who could not help with his specific needs.
