If the chromium content in stainless steel exceeds 10.5%, rust cannot be quickly ruled out. Even if austenitic stainless steel has more than 20% chromium and over 8% nickel, it can still rust under improper handling, processing, or structural defects. Passivation Layer Like ordinary steel, stainless steel reacts with oxygen to form an oxide film. In ordinary steel, oxygen reacts with existing iron atoms to form a porous surface that continues to oxidize, potentially leading to complete rusting of the workpiece. In stainless steel, oxygen reacts with the relatively higher concentration of chromium atoms in the steel. Chromium and oxygen atoms form a dense oxide film that prevents further oxidation reactions. Due to its inert reaction with the environment, this oxide film is also known as the passivation layer. The appearance or durability of the passivation layer mainly depends on the alloy composition of the steel. Corrosion If 'rustproof' stainless steel shows signs of corrosion, there may be two reasons: either the passivation layer was not formed, or the passivation layer was damaged. Only through thorough cleaning can the damage to the passivation layer be avoided. The post-processing surface must be completely free of all residues.

The following types of corrosion are based on the damaged passivation layer: Surface Wear Corrosion. Surface wear corrosion means uniform wear on the workpiece surface. This type of corrosion occurs only when acid or a strong alkali acts on the workpiece surface. If the annual removal rate is less than 0.1 mm, the material is considered to have sufficient resistance to surface corrosion. Pitting Corrosion (Pitting) Pitting corrosion occurs when the passivation layer is locally damaged. Chloride ions cause this rupture by displacing the chromium atoms needed to form the passivation layer in stainless steel, resulting in needle-like holes. Deposits, foreign rust, residues, or annealing colors can increase pitting corrosion. Intergranular Corrosion Intergranular corrosion happens when chromium carbides precipitate at grain boundaries under thermal action and dissolve in acidic media. This type of corrosion appears at the following temperatures: Austenitic steel, between 450 °C - 850°C; Ferritic steel, above 900°C.
