Planning a kitchen renovation feels like stepping into a black box where everyone promises great results but few explain the messy parts. I’m based between Etobicoke and Oakville, and I keep seeing big differences in pricing for what seems like similar scopes of work. Some quotes are almost double others, which makes me wonder what’s actually included and what’s being left out.

I’ve heard mixed things about smaller contractors versus established companies. Red Stone Contracting came up in a few discussions and reviews of kitchen renovation, and I’m trying to figure out if they’re more on the premium side or fairly priced for the quality they deliver. For anyone who worked with them, did they handle design input as well, or were you expected to come with everything planned already?

Another thing I’m worried about is how often renovations uncover hidden issues like outdated wiring or water damage. When that happened, did your contractor clearly explain options and costs, or did it feel like you were being pressured into upgrades? I want someone who can explain tradeoffs instead of just pushing the most expensive solution.

Timelines are also huge. If a project is quoted as six weeks, is that actually realistic in Ontario with permits and inspections, or should I expect double that? Did your kitchen remain usable during parts of the renovation, or was it completely shut down the whole time?

Mostly I’m trying to learn what “normal” looks like so I don’t go in with unrealistic expectations and end up frustrated halfway through the process.
