| I recently made two versions of my resume, one using a regular Word template and one using an ai resume builder. I wanted to see which approach actually gave me a better result, so I kept track of the differences. Here’s what I found.
Time spent:
Word template: about 2 hours, mostly adjusting spacing, fonts, and alignment. AI tool: about 40 minutes, including editing the text.
Formatting: The Word template gave me full control, but a small change often broke the layout. The tool kept everything neat automatically, though I had fewer design options.
Writing quality: I wrote the Word version myself and it was honest but plain. The tool suggested stronger wording, but some lines were too general, so I had to rewrite them with real numbers and details.
Flexibility: Making a new version for a different job was much faster with the tool. In Word, I had to copy, edit, and reformat each time.
My conclusion: For a one-time resume, either option works. For someone applying to many different jobs, the tool saves a lot of effort. The best result came from combining both: AI for the first draft and structure, then my own editing for accuracy and personality.
I’d love to hear your opinion:
Which method do you prefer, and why? Have you ever had formatting problems when sending a Word resume? How do you keep your resume looking personal when using templates or tools?
