| THE MIJAC CHARITY RECORDING HAS BEGUN:
Stars gather at studio in Los Angeles, Jackson participates via satellite.
*Michael Jackson took advantage of the talent gathered for BET’s 25th anniversary special in Los Angeles last week by deciding to schedule a recording session for his all-star charity single at the same time, reports Billboard.
The singer’s publicist, Raymone Bain, said recording began last week on the Jackson-penned single, which was originally titled “From the Bottom of My Heart,” but will be renamed in the coming days. Jackson, himself, is not in Los Angeles and is understood to have participated in the sessions at L.A.’s Conway Studios via satellite and telephone.
Bain says that since early this month, Jackson "was in London tweaking the music as well as putting the finishing touches on it before sending it out to various artists" who he wanted to contribute.
The single, to benefit victims of the recent hurricanes, had originally been set to include over a dozen artists, who were each listed in a press release about the song last month. But Jackson ended up rewriting the song, and as such, "he didn't need as many artists as he originally had planned for" when it came time to record,” Bain said.
So far, sources confirm to Billboard that Ciara, Snoop Dogg and Shirley Caesar made a visit to Conway.
Since a number of the acts were planning on being in Los Angeles this week for BET's 25th anniversary celebration, "he thought it was a good time to do the vocals," Bain says.
"There are others who have to lay vocals as well," Bain added. "[Jackson] plans on getting together with them for the chorus. We still have two to three more steps before the song will be ready for release."
*In other MiJac news, the mother of the boy who accused him of child molestation was back in court on Friday to address her welfare fraud charges. Absent from the proceeding at first, Superior Court Judge David Horwitz demanded that she come to court. After a two-hour delay, she rushed in, dressed in a jogging suit.
She is accused of perjury in falsely applying for welfare aid. Prosecutors allege that she collected $18,782 in fraudulently obtained welfare payments between November 2001 and March 2003, failing to disclose that she had received a $150,000 settlement of a lawsuit against a department store chain.
The 37-year-old woman didn't speak during Friday's proceeding. Her lawyer agreed to a postponement until Dec. 19 for further scheduling.
