The cervical spine is made up of seven vertebrae, which are separated by discs that act as shock absorbers. These vertebrae protect the spinal cord and allow for movement of the neck. However, injury, degenerative changes, or other conditions can cause damage to the discs or vertebrae, resulting in pain, weakness, or numbness in the neck, arms, or hands. Anterior cervical fusion surgery is performed through the front of the neck, as opposed to the back or side. This is because the front of the neck provides the most direct access to the cervical spine and allows for better visualization of the affected area.
